Caption: New diving dress undergoes deep sea tests .
A diving dress invented by Mr J S Peress of Byfleet , Surrey , underwent deep water performance tests in the open sea off Portsmouth . It was taken out in HMS Tedworth . The dress is a steel cylinder with a dome shaped top , which is the headpiece , to which flexible legs and arms are attached . The arms are furnished with pincer - like claws as hands. The dress enables diving to be carried out at much greater depths than are at present possible .
