Turner was a controversial figure in his lifetime, but he made landscape painting as important as the painting of historical or religious scenes. He is famous for his oil paintings – perhaps most of all his paintings of the sea and ships. JMW Turner is also one of the greatest British watercolour landscape painters. His turbulent life took him to many places where he both studied and practised his art. His membership of the Royal Academy was an important part of his life and enabled him to influence others.
On his death JMW Turner left thousands of his paintings and drawings to the Nation. Tate Britain is the home of the Turner Bequest and the world’s largest collection of the artist’s work. The Turner Collection is on permanent display at Tate Britain
